I was focused as close as my tripod would allow in this photograph. I couldn’t see this microscopic detail with my bare eye. Sometimes I had to use the camera to see what was hiding inside.
The microscopic shapes here are inside this solid ice. The bubbles at one point had been moving up and down, freely flowing, but here are frozen in one instant.
Freezing over time creates layers of ripples. It’s like a topographical map—every time the water came up, another layer was added.
Here is an example of an image that was only possible—of shapes that only exist—at certain, extremely cold, temperatures. This was taken first thing in the morning, as the light was just coming up. It represents a moment in time—within minutes, this changed as the sun’s heat melted the fine crystals, even though it was still way below zero.
